Tord Gustavsen Quartet (Norway)

  • Queensland Multicultural Centre Auditorium 102 Main St Kangaroo Point, QLD, 4169 Australia (map)

Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen has been at the forefront of Scandinavian jazz for more than a decade. He creates reflective, evocative music blending sounds from his heritage with hints of cool jazz, blues and gospel themes.

Gustavsen’s quartet with Tore Brunborg on saxophones, Sigurd Hole on acoustic bass, and long-term associate Jarle Vespestad on drums, works to serve the dynamic emotional intensity of Tord’s compositions with elegance and meditative measure.

The Tord Gustavsen Quartet is a solid unit whose interactions patiently build the music toward its climaxes with strength and restraint. Delving into repertoire from the jazz world and beyond, this concert will showcase the group’s sublime interplay, luminescent solos and magnetic inner groove.

“Each note seems to hold sacred power…quietly spellbinding.”
— DownBeat
'...Utterly distinctive and arresting. .. Each and every touch on the keyboard is not just a note being struck, but a carefully sculpted sound of almost breathtaking passion and beauty. .. Gustavsen and his fellow Norwegians breathe some soul and fire into everything they do. The accumulative effect could be described as aural love-making. ...  Unreservedly recommended as one of the key releases of the year...."
